Jenny De Veaux

Owner & Coach

I am passionate about coaching people to do things they never thought they could, getting entire families involved in fitness, and building a gym where even the smallest accomplishments are celebrated by the gym as a whole even by people who just met.

Jenny came across CrossFit in 2005 while in college for kinesiology with the intent of going into physical therapy. In her last year of school, she worked in a PT clinic and this solidified her belief that the traditional thoughts of health, fitness, and rehabilitation were outdated. She just couldn’t get behind utilizing a leg press machine instead of a squat, or knee extensions and leg curls instead of deadlifts and so on. So she became a personal trainer, and then a CrossFit coach. She coached CrossFit for many years as a personal trainer and was brought to San Diego Athletics in 2010 by Anders and Bryan. In the summer of 2017 she took over for Anders as owner and is proud and excited to make SDA an amazing place where people can come together through fitness and achieve goals they never before thought possible.

When she’s not in the gym Jenny spends most of her time surfing, snowdoarding, hiking, spending time with her Husband Joey and is almost never without her dog Motley.

Jay Porcano began his experience in the fitness industry by obtaining his CPT in 2014 so that he could further his training for BUD/S in 2015-16. Day to day, most of his time was spent swimming, running, or doing calisthenics in various combinations. Jay had exposure to some of the best practices and coaches while training with the military. Shortly after exiting this training Jay spent about a year doing distance running at ultra-marathon distances.

After leaving the Navy he obtained his CFL1 certification. Jay is especially familiar with running, gymnastics, and mobility work. Jay wants to help others achieve their goals as well as educate athletes as opposed to blind instruction. A large part of Jay’s motivation in life is to better understand the resiliency people display during challenging times and help others develop the mental toughness required for long term progress in fitness and in life.

Part Time Coach

Aaron grew up in Missouri playing football, baseball, basketball and running track.  He joined the military in 2004 and was a NAVY diver for 10 years where he was stationed in Hawaii and Florida.  He started CrossFit in 2007 and began coaching on the side in 2010 during command PT 3 days a week.  Aaron has been coaching full time since 2014.  He went to the California Regionals on a team in 2016, 2017 and 2018.  In 2018 his team qualified for the games before one of the team members was disqualified.

One food Aaron couldn’t live without is pepperoni pizza! His hobbies outside the gym would be hiking, camping, ultimate frisbee and a little backyard foozball.  He also loves to workout to country music.

Ben Ferro

Part time Coach

Ben was introduced to CrossFit in 2011 by his high school guidance counselor.  The summer after graduating high school Ben worked as an intern at CrossFit Lando in Woburn, Massachusetts.  In 2015 Ben transferred from UMass Lowell to San Diego State University where he studied Kinesiology. While applying for server jobs around Pacific Beach he stumbled upon San Diego Athletics where he met Bryan and Jenny.  After graduating from SDSU in 2017, Ben was brought on as a coach. He loves watching the evolution of new members along with the milestones achieved by veterans.

Bryan Boorstein

Founder, Owner & Coach

I love the conversations before and after class. Sometimes it’s as simple as talking about [the client’s] life and learning about them as a person — but I really love watching their evolution from ‘client’ to ‘athlete’.

Bryan was obsessed with basketball from the time he was 6 years old. He made All-Conference in basketball his junior and senior years in high school and played varsity for 3 years. He was offered an opportunity to play at a couple small schools but opted to attend James Madison University with Anders Varner, where he played club and rec league sports.

Bryan started weight training at 15 years old to compete with the older guys on the Varsity team. His passion for weight training slowly emerged and overtook basketball in college. When he and Anders decided to open CrossFit PB in 2010, he knew this was his calling. In January 2011, they finally were able to quit their day jobs and make this fitness thing their lives.

Now, his true passion lies in watching their athletes improve. He truly loves that moment when he finds the perfect cue to get an athlete to move better.
